Dr. Homi Bhabha Young Scientist Competition

Dr.Homi Bhabha Young Scientist Competition is conducted by Mumbai Science Teacher’s Association (MSTA) since 1981. The aim of this competition is to help students take keen interest in science and develop right scientific attitude.

This competition encourages students to go beyond the school books, develop good understanding and reasoning of scientific concepts and stay updated about latest happenings in science.

The Competition consists of three Phases - Phase 1 - Written test - Phase 2 - Practicals - Phase 3 - Action Research Project and Interview competition

Through these 3 Phases, MSTA searches for talented students with high scientific aptitude and awards them with Medals, scholarships and certificates as further motivation.

Eligibility

Students in std. VI belonging to SSC, CBSE and ICSE board from all over Maharashtra are eligible to participate in the competition.

Students in std. IX belonging to SSC, CBSE and ICSE board from all over Maharashtra are eligible to participate in this competition.

Syllabus & Exam Pattern

Students need to be thorough with their textbooks for IV, V and VI std of SSC syllabus and content related to the same from ICSE and CBSE books for 6th std. Majority of the questions will be from SSC board text books.

Less emphasis will be given on knowledge based questions and more emphasis on understanding, reasoning, correlation, etc of scientific concepts.

The questions related to general knowledge in science will be based on the topics like scientific happenings of the last year and science around day to day life.

Competitive Structure

Phase 1 : Written TestThe written test consists of 100 multiple choice questions each carrying one mark based on General Science and General knowledge in Science. There is no negative marking.

Phase 2 : PracticalsThe Practicals are of 30 marks and they test students through experiments on general science.

Selection of students for Phase 3 is done by considering 30% of marks obtained in Phase 1 and marks obtained in Phase 2. Around 10% of top students are selected for Phase 3.

Phase 3: Action Research Project and Interview

30% marks of Phase I+ Marks of Phase II & Phase III are considered for final selection

  • Top 10% candidates get Gold Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 1000/-
  • Next 60% candidates get Silver Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 500/-
  • Remaining all candidates get Bronze Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 300/-
